PETROIA ABBEY

This Abbey is an important example of Romanesque styling from the 11th & 12th centuries. It is divided into three naves and the facade isolates the massive stone polygonal columns of four spans, recently rediscovered. The missing roof part is now unique entrance to the church with a large vista of the apse. The underlying crypt is wide and beautiful and there are many roman columns, elements of which have been used in the restoration of the building. The Abbey is dedicated to Saint Mart and Saint Egidio which Benedictine monks built on behalf of Marquises Bourbon del Monte.
Also nearby is the beautiful antique village of Lugnano as well as the village of Petrelle where Bourbon's castle is situated.
