SAN FRANCESCO CHURCH
San Francesco Church dates back the early fourteenth century and is designed using the Latin cross structure with three polygonal apses which are aisle less; outside there are signs of modification made in the eighteenth century, while the interior is now completely baroque. There is a copy of "Sposalizio della Vergine" (The Virgin's Wedding) Raffaello's masterpiece painted in 1504 and stolen by Napoleon's army in 1798. Today it is at the Brera in Milan.
Also to be visited is the annexed chapter house containing the original, elegant, large mullioned windows with two lights and the Vasari's Chapel, designed by Giorgio Vasari (1563) that contains a large painting of the "Incoronazione della Vergine" (Virgin's Coronation) painted by Vasari for the main altar a few years later. A 1556 beautifully forged iron gate closes this chapel and there is a sixteenth century choir is on the walls.
