The ancient town
VITELLI ALLA CANNONIERA PALACE

So called because it is situated on the site where there was once a gun deposit (or foundry). It is one of five buildings the Vitelli Family built in Città di Castello, between the end of 1400 and second half of 1500.
The main façade is decorated with graffiti of the Vasari design and it overlooks the garden that was very famous in Europe during the XVI century for its collection of exotic plants. It was built between 1521 and 1532 by Alessandro Vitelli and his wife Paola dei Rossi di San Secondo Parmense. During 1912 the antiquarian Elia Volpi, who had already restored Palazzo Davanzati in Florence, gave the building back its ancient splendour and donated it to the municipality to be the site of the Municipal Gallery.
