The
decorations in hall VIII consist of seascapes set within the usual arabesque
type designs. They closely resemble the decorations in the main reception
hall of 1537 and were obviously done by the same painters, Gherardi and
Battista from Cittą di Castello, reflecting a taste of that period which we
can find at San Giustino, at S. Michele in Bosco (Bologna), in the Palazzo
dei Conservatori and in Castel S. Angelo (Rome). It is difficult to evaluate
their original level of quality because of their poor state of conservation
and clumsily done restoration attempts in the past. So bad is the
deterioration that they appear more the work of mediocre apprentices than
that of a refined master as Gherardi. The curators of the Museum preferred
to exclude the exibition of paintings in this room, leaving the richly
decorated walls as undisturbed attraction along with only a few unobtrusive
pieces of furniture.
