Hall 10, 11
Hall 10 and the Ceiling
In 1543 Alessandro Vitelli obtained permission from the municipality to extend
his mansion on the south side up to the town wall.
With
the extension of the main reception hall and the construction of two new
rooms (IX and X), a part of the exterior decorations was incorporated inside
the new rooms.Considerable traces of the exterior mural decorations done by
Cristoforo Gherardi and his assistants are visible today in hall X. On the
ceiling visitors can see a design with dolphins which is probably the most
authentic part of the entire mural decoration.
Hall 11 The Main Reception hall.
The
Main Reception hall was built, along with halls XI and X in 1543 when
Alessandro Vitelli expanded his mansion. Two separate decoration phases are
to be seen on the walls of the main hall: one done by Cristoforo Gherardi
and assistants in 1537 and the other by Cola dell'Amatrice and assistants
after the enlargement of the mansion in 1543. To Cristoforo Gherardi we must
attribute the east and north walls with animal designs, landscape in the
central section, and above, almost entirely lost due to later decorations
painted over them historical subjects monochromatically represented. The
subjects of the second phase by Cola were identified by Guerrini as
Hannibal, Scipione, Caesar and Alexander the Great. Unsurprisingly, the
heroes of Alessandro Vitelli and at the same time subjects very much in
fashion in the city mansions and country villas of the Roman nobility.
According to Guerrini the subjects of mural decoration in that period tended
to represent events in the life of a person or a family. In the
center of the hall there are two large tables of the XVIIth century in
carved walnut. According to local tradition, they were originally in the
meeting hall of the San Francesco monestery. They are of central Italian
origin, possibly the work of local artisans.
